What a Drafting Chair Is For

Drafting chairs look like office chairs on stilts, and the difference is one component that changes everything about how they work.

The Foot Ring

A tall chair raises your seat well above the point where your feet reach the floor. Without somewhere to put them, your legs hang.

Dangling legs put the full weight of each leg on the underside of the thigh, compressing circulation. That is the numbness, pins and needles and cold feet people get from bar stools.

A foot ring gives the feet a platform, which restores the right-angle geometry at the knee and takes the load off the thighs.

Where They Belong

  • Standing desks used in a sitting mode
  • Kitchen counters and breakfast bars
  • Workbenches and craft tables
  • Salon and studio work at raised surfaces
  • Anywhere the surface is above standard desk height

Height-adjustable drafting chairs with a foot rest and back support, of the kind at stellamia.org, are the seated half of a standing-desk setup rather than a separate category.

Match the Chair to the Surface

The measurement that matters. Standard desks are around thirty inches, counters around thirty-six, and bar height around forty-two.

Seat height should sit roughly ten to twelve inches below the working surface. A drafting chair’s stated range is what tells you which surfaces it covers.

Buying a bar stool for a standing desk, or a drafting chair for a normal desk, is the common mismatch.

The Foot Ring Must Adjust

Or at least be at a height that suits you. A ring set for somebody taller leaves your feet dangling exactly as before.

Adjustable rings are worth the premium for anybody shorter than average.

Stability at Height

Worth taking seriously. A tall chair has a higher centre of gravity than a normal one, and it tips more readily.

A wide base is what compensates. Leaning back hard in a tall chair, or pushing off a counter, is how they go over.

Casters at height are a particular hazard for children, and these are not chairs to leave where a child will climb them.

Sitting Is Still Sitting

A drafting chair at a standing desk is a perched sitting position rather than standing.

The benefit of a sit-stand desk comes from alternating, not from the chair.

Never Stand on It

A tall wheeled chair is the worst thing in a house to stand on.
